After graduating from the University of Adelaide in 2000, Alex completed his internship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital before moving to Melbourne to start his specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He trained at various hospitals, including Monash Medical Centre, Dandenong Hospital and Box Hill Hospital, and completed formal fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Reproductive Biology Unit of the Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne IVF and Monash IVF. Alex has earned his reputation as a highly regarded Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon. He is the one of a very few specialists in Melbourne who performs the majority of gynecological and fertility-related procedures including myomectomies (removal of fibroids) and hysterectomies (removal of uterus) via minimally invasive laparoscopic ("keyhole") surgery.
In addition, Alex is a leading surgeon in Microsurgery, which includes Tubal Ligation and Vasectomy Reversal operations. He also specialises in Andrology, which manages male causes of infertility such as abnormal sperm count. Another one of his sought after surgical skills includes performing a highly delicate procedure of a testicular biopsy.
Alex is a highly experienced obstetrician and gynecologist providing modern obstetric care including High Risk Pregnancies and managing complicated Gynecological, Fertility and IVF issues. Specialist in all aspects of male and female infertility evaluation and treatment, Alex has special interest in areas including anovulatory disorders such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, age-related infertility and endometriosis. Currently Alex is a senior consultant at The Royal Women’s Hospital where he is also involved in the supervision of trainee obstetricians, gynecologists and fertility specialists. Highly respected among his colleagues, other specialists often refer complex cases to him. Moreover, Alex holds a Graduate Certificate in Evidence-based Medicine from Monash University, Masters of Clinical Epidemiology/Biostatistics from the University of Newcastle, and Masters of Reproductive Medicine from the University of NSW. He regularly contributes to scholarly research papers as an expert biostatistician. Dr Polyakov is a fellow of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FRANZCOG). He is a member of the Fertility Society of Australia (FSA) and the Australasian Gynecological Endoscopy & Surgery Society (AGES).
